4 years later, fate brought them together again
Ambling beside the brook, a man’s eyes caught a peculiar sight within the woodland. Heart pounding, he observed the formidable presence of a large wolf motionless on the turf. Upon closer inspection, the wanderer discerned the creature was ensnared and immobile. As he drew nearer, the large wolf attempted to distance itself, to no avail. It wasn’t a male but a female, evidenced by her engorged teats—a clear sign her offspring were somewhere nearby, dependent on her return.
The gentleman felt an urge to liberate the mother wolf. However, the possibility of an attack due to her fright and hostility held him back. He resolved to locate her young first, scouting for clues in the snowy underbrush that might lead to her den. The footprints were a giveaway, and after a short distance, a soft whimper led him to discover a burrow of famished wolf pups. Alive but frail, these cubs highlighted the urgency of the situation—their mother had been trapped for too long. Scooping up the little ones into his sack, he hurried back to their mother’s side.
Arriving at the site, the scent of her litter reached the mother wolf, prompting her to stand, despite her agony, before letting out a sorrowful howl. Then, as the man released the cubs, they eagerly reunited with their mother, nursing hungrily. Yet, the mother’s ordeal wasn’t over—the trap’s jaws clenched tighter, exacerbating her wound. The man longed to alleviate her suffering, but met only with her wary snarls.
Recognizing the wolf’s hunger, the man recalled a deer carcass he’d spotted earlier, half-buried in the drifts. Swiftly, he fetched the venison, offering sustenance to the beleaguered wolf. Though she devoured the offering eagerly, she remained wary of him. In response, the would-be savior erected a simple shelter nearby, minding the cubs and continuing to feed their mother, aiming to cultivate trust. As the second day drew to a close, the she-wolf’s growls subsided, and she finally allowed him close enough to release her from the merciless grip of the trap.
While the she-wolf might have fled immediately following her release, she instead approached the man, tenderly licking his hands in gratitude. Remarkably, she beckoned him to accompany her and the cubs to a ridge where a pack awaited. He bid farewell with a wave, leaving the wolves to their own devices.
Four years had passed since that fateful encounter when the man found himself in the same woods. As he approached the spot where he had parted with the mother wolf, a familiar howl pierced the air. It was her—the very wolf he had saved—emerging from the forest to warmly greet the man who had once been her savior.
