In Hollywood “war” because of Tom Cruise
Paramount Studios is hoping to revive the “Top Gun” franchise with a third film in the popular series.
“Top Gun: Maverick” co-writer Ehren Kruger is writing the script for the new sequel, and sources indicate that the “Maverick” director is also slated to return. The goal is to reunite Tom Cruise with colleagues from the new generation, Miles Teller and Glenn Powell.
This news comes a few days after Warner Bros. Discovery announced that Cruise has signed an acting and film production deal with the company, although the deal is not exclusive. Cruise’s recent films have mostly been at Paramount, although he did not have an exclusive deal there.
We are thrilled to be working with Tom, an absolute legend in the film industry,” said De Luca and Abdy in a statement. “Our vision, from day one, has been to rebuild this iconic studio to the heights of its glory days, and, in fact, when we first sat down with [Warner Bros. Discovery chief] David Zaslav to talk about joining the Warner Bros. Discovery team, he said to us, ‘We are on a mission to bring Warner Bros. back – we have the best resources, storytelling IP, and talent in the business – and we need to bring Tom Cruise back to Warner Bros!’ Variety Magazine
While some might interpret the news of “Top Gun” as a response in the war for Cruise, this sequel has been quietly developing since late fall.
2022’s Top Gun: Maverick was a box office hit, earning $1.5 billion worldwide. The film came decades after Tony Scott’s 1986 Top Gun, which helped establish Cruise as a rising movie star.
Cruise: “I look forward to making great movies together!”
“I have great respect and admiration for David, Pam, Mike, and the entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery and their commitment to movies, movie fans, and the theatrical experience,” Cruise said. “I look forward to making great movies together!”
We should not expect a quick release of the new film. The famous actor is currently working on the eighth installment of “Mission Impossible” which will keep him at least until the planned release in May next year. Still, this development further confirms one thing that became apparent after this week – Tom is still a sought-after star and studios will be fighting for him for years to come, Headliner reported.
