“TLC approached us back in 2005, offering a unique chance to enlighten people about dwarfism,” reflected Amy in 2010. “We were astounded—our family’s life was about to be showcased in a way that had never been done before.”

“It began with a few episodes and swiftly expanded into multiple seasons,” she continued. “Look at us now.”

The Start of Amy and Matt’s Journey

Amy, initially uneasy at gatherings of those with her condition, soon became an influential voice for the achondroplasia community.

Carrying on with her studies and work, Amy maintained her presence at LPA events. In 1987, at such a conference, she met Matt and sparked an instant bond.

Despite the long distance between California and Michigan, Amy and Matt cultivated their love through constant phone calls and occasional visits.

During an excursion to Yosemite, Matt asked for Amy’s hand in marriage.

“He was visibly nervous, and his grave expression made me concerned for his well-being,” Amy recalled in her memoir. “But his solemn mood belied a heartwarming proposal. And, of course, I said yes,” she thrilled.

“Although I cannot recount everything he expressed at that moment,” she admitted, “the memory of saying yes still fills me with joy.”

Building a Family

In 1987, Matt and Amy married and their family grew to include twins Zachary and Jeremy (1990), Molly (1993), and Jacob (1997).

The pair invested in a farm in Oregon, which remains an iconic piece of their legacy.

Opening their farm and family life to film crews, Amy and Matt welcomed the world into their unique journey on the small screen.

In addition to her maternal duties, Amy served as a soccer coach and a foundation president while carrying on her teaching career.

“Being fortunate in recent years prompted me to contribute to causes close to my heart,” she commented. “This includes work with the Dwarf Athletic Association of America, support for foster care and adoption services, and helping low-income seniors and families without homes.

“We’ve been actively backing a family shelter in Portland—one of the rare ones that keeps loved ones together,” she stated.

“We put in every effort to stay considerate, especially for our children’s sake,” she shared regarding the split. “We’ve shared a substantial journey together, so there’s no point in harboring animosity. While things didn’t pan out, we’ve both turned a new leaf.”

“Post-divorce, the producers are like, ‘You must go on dates! Get out there!’. And I’m thinking, I need a moment to just collect myself and be on my own,” Amy elaborated.

Post-divorce, Amy faced the hard choice of distancing herself from the family’s cherished farmstead. She opted to hand over her stake in the farm to Matt, and reports from The Sun indicate she received approximately $600,000 in the transaction.

Nevertheless, it wasn’t long before Amy decided to open her heart to romance once more. Now, she finds joy in her new marriage with Chris Marek.

Their initial encounter didn’t spark an immediate connection. Returning to the world of dating seemed daunting for Amy, yet she bravely attended a singles event where Chris was also present.

With time, the romance began to blossom, especially after Chris invited her for a motorcycle ride, paving the way for their relationship.

“Due to COVID, many people had to modify or postpone their 2020 plans to 2021, which meant other venues were no longer available, turning our backup plan into our primary one,” Chris remarked.
