A pensioner helped a herd of elephants and they did not forget the kind man. When he became very weak, the animals came to say goodbye to him!

In the late 90s, an elderly gentleman extended his hand to a wild elephant troupe in the depths of South Africa. This particular group had a reputation for being fickle, prompting even seasoned wildlife guardians to maintain their distance for fear of hostility. However, years down the line, as the gentleman’s health declined, this herd embarked on a journey to bid him a final adieu.

Known throughout the globe as the “Elephant Whisperer,” Lawrence Anthony had a well-earned reputation for his deep understanding of these majestic creatures.

It was back in 1999 when a dire situation arose: the pack found themselves ensnared in a marsh. Anthony was acutely aware that these giants were wary of human proximity. They desired breathing space to establish trust.

Showcasing immense patience, Anthony quietly waited for the herd to accept him. This vigil spanned several days. He supplied them with sustenance, and with delicate guidance, he eventually navigated the entire herd from the quagmire to terra firma.

One might assume that was where the narrative concluded, yet that was not the case. Elephants are renowned for their extraordinary memory, especially towards those who have aided them.

Now, as Lawrence’s vitality waned and he became housebound, his family witnessed an extraordinary sight. A procession of elephants, numbering around 30, had trekked 12 kilometers to seek out his abode within the reserve, a quest that lasted nearly two days.

These wise beings had gathered to express a solemn farewell to a beloved ally. Subsequently, the elephants receded into the expanse, potentially for the last time…
