An obese elderly dog abandoned on the highway has now found its home

At the start of the year, an unacceptable scene unfolded when an elderly Australian Shepherd dog, aged 15, was left to fend for itself on a busy highway. The dog, significantly overweight and battling a severe maggot infestation, was at a loss, abandoned, yet clung to life with a remarkable tenacity.

Devoted animal rescuers dedicated their efforts to nurse the disadvantaged canine back to full health and secure a loving household. Despite being overlooked by potential adopters due to her senior status, a compassionate individual stepped forward to offer her a chance at happiness. In doing so, they transformed the once ailing creature into a cherished pet with a forever home, banishing the specter of solitude for good.

The dog, who would come to be known as Belky, was found meandering beside a Michigan highway when an observant bystander summoned the Saginaw Police Department to her aid. Belky was promptly brought to the Saginaw County Animal Care Center (SCACC), where a veterinary team meticulously assessed and treated her conditions.

As she recuperated from her maggot affliction and began a weight management regimen, Belky was warmly welcomed by the Animal Welfare Society of Midland County. It was here that she awaited the moment she would meet her new, loving owners.

After shedding some excess weight, Belky was ready to find her new family. The BISSELL Pet Foundation’s “Empty Shelters” event played a crucial role in bringing Belky to the attention of her future owner.

Spotting Belky’s photo on Facebook, Brianna was smitten at first sight. Meeting Belky face-to-face only deepened the connection and ensured that they were a perfect match. Brianna stepped up to adopt the venerable canine, offering her the sanctuary of a permanent home.

Bearing in mind the arduous challenge older dogs face in getting adopted, Brianna reflected on her fortunate timing. Despite Belky’s medical needs that might deter others, Brianna felt blessed when she arrived at the shelter to discover that Belky awaited her. “It was serendipitous that I had the opportunity to visit the shelter the next day, and to my joy, she was still there,” Brianna recounted.
