Barista is fed up with rude customers, so he decides to teach them a lesson with brutally honest sign
Pause for a moment and think: when’s the last occasion you uttered ‘please’ or ‘thank you’? If it’s hard to remember, take solace in knowing you’re not alone. Over at CUPS Coffee and Tea, one barista grew increasingly frustrated by this decline in common courtesy and decided to take matters into his own hands. His weapon of choice? A sign posted outside his establishment designed to jog the memory of patrons on the value of politeness.
The sign asserted:
“One small coffee” — $5.00
“One small coffee, please” — $3.00
“Hello, may I have one small coffee, please?” — $1.75
Patrons quickly noticed that not only would saying these ‘magic words’ not cost them a dime, but they would also keep a bit more cash in their pockets.
Moreover, the signage prompted deeper reflection on the significance of treating service workers with dignity and thoughtfulness. After all, the individual preparing your morning brew has risen early to ensure your day starts with a delightful cup of coffee.
In truth, we’ve grown complacent, seldom acknowledging the efforts and sacrifices of those serving us.
Austin, the ingenious barista behind the campaign, relayed to WDBJ7: “I figured it was up to me to right the wrongs of the world, so I began to upcharge those who couldn’t spare a moment to greet us and acknowledge that we’re fellow humans on the other side of the counter.”
The sign captured the curiosity of many people walking by and someone was moved enough to share it on Facebook. Austin’s straightforward yet impactful message swiftly gained traction online, winning applause for his creative approach to reminding folks of basic courtesies.
