“His Fate Deserves A Separate Film.” Remember The Big Guy From The Green Mile?
His journey to the silver screen was a marathon, not a sprint.
Celebrated for his touching portrayal in The Green Mile, actor Michael Clarke Duncan’s life was much more than his on-screen presence. He portrayed a character doomed by a wrongful death sentence, yet many are unaware of the trials and tribulations that Duncan faced off-screen.
Raised by a solo mother, Duncan and his sister were nurtured with perseverance and strength. His early dreams took him into the sporting realm at a historically Black institution, though an abrupt departure from basketball ensued. University life was short-lived once his mother fell ill, prompting him to assume the role of family provider. His imposing stature led him to a nightclub security role, and eventually to the frontline of celebrity protection as a bodyguard.
Duncan embraced his passion for acting in his 30s. His cinematic break came with the 1998 blockbuster Armageddon. It was during this project that he befriended Bruce Willis, who later advocated for his casting in The Green Mile. His performance in the latter clinched him Academy and Golden Globe nominations. He went on to dazzle audiences in “Sin City”, “Planet of the Apes”, and lent his distinctive voice to video games, animated series, and advertisements.
In 2012, Duncan’s life was nearly claimed by a heart attack, and despite a heroic rescue by his partner, he succumbed to his condition two months later while still under medical care.
