Hidden among the foliage lay a sheep, barely recognizable, burdened by an excessively heavy coat of wool. Its inability to rise was apparent, and seeing its struggle, the passerby swiftly reached out to Edgar’s Mission, a nearby sanctuary for farm animals, calling for help.

A Swift Operation to Save Alex

@edgarsmission Say hello to Alex – buried under 40kg of extra wool and rescued by an altruistic bushwalker. Witness his astonishing transformation over the past 18 months! ❤️ Did you know sheep like Alex require regular shearing for health reasons? This is the result of selective breeding by humans for wool used in commerce, altering their natural existence. Wild mouflon ancestors had a different fur that adapted to the seasons, shedding as needed, unlike the sheep of today. #animalrescue #farmsanctuary #friendsnotfood #rescueanimals #sheepshearing #sheepoftiktok ♬ original sound – bree

On their arrival, Pamela Ahern of Edgar’s Mission evaluated the sheep’s condition, remarking on the animal’s apparent prolonged suffering. Named Alex by his rescuers, he was eagerly brought to safety, with the team immediately setting to work, shearing off the heavy 88-pound fleece that had been his prison.

With each layer of fleece lifted from Alex, his spirit, too, seemed to lighten. Standing with newfound strength, Alex took his initial steps in newfound freedom, relearning his natural grace.

“A unanimous sense of relief was felt when we finished,” shared Ahern, echoing the emotional relief palpable among the rescuers.
