Suzanne Somers, Three’s Company and Step by Step Actress, Dead at 76

The entertainment world mourns the loss of Suzanne Somers, famed for her performances on television series Three’s Company and Step by Step.

Somers’ passing occurred on Sunday morning, as confirmed by PEOPLE. Her 77th birthday would have been celebrated the following day.

“Early in the morning on October 15th, Suzanne Somers departed from this world in the serenity of her own home. She valiantly fought a fierce type of breast cancer for more than two decades,” shared R. Couri Hay, Somers’ devoted publicist, on the family’s behalf.

“Alan, her husband, along with her son Bruce and other close family members, were by her side,” the announcement read. “While they were preparing to honor her 77th year, they are now poised to celebrate her remarkable life. They extend their gratitude to the countless fans and admirers who have shown her immense love.”

In another statement, Hay remarked that Somers passed away in her dream home, a beautiful residence she loved deeply.

“Suzanne was always full of aspirations, actively working, dreaming, and incorporating her family into her business, which includes her grandchildren and step-children,” noted her publicist, acknowledging her engagement with life until her last moments.

Hay revealed that a private funeral for the family is scheduled this week, and a public memorial is planned for November.

Somers, before the end of her life, expressed excitement to PEOPLE about being surrounded by family for her upcoming birthday.

She had plans to spend her day with those closest to her heart, including Alan, now her widower, her three children, Leslie, Stephen, and Bruce, along with daughter-in-law Caroline as well as her six cherished grandchildren.

In the very same conversation, Hamel, Somers’ husband of 45 years, lauded her for her steadfastness.

“Suzanne and I have just returned from six weeks of rigorous physical therapy in the Midwest,” he shared with PEOPLE. “After all these years, her incredible resolve and dedication still astound me.”

In an emotional Instagram post in July, Somers disclosed that she faced another bout of breast cancer after her original diagnosis in 2000.

Alongside an image of herself and Hamel, now 87, she revealed, “While breast cancer has been a recurring challenge for me over the last two decades, I’ve relentlessly fought back each time. Employing both alternative and mainstream treatments, I’m well-versed in this fight. This battle is not new to me—I’m ready in my armor, and I stand strong as a warrior.”

She further expressed in her post how much Hamel and her family’s unyielding support has meant to her.

“Through each phase, Alan has been by my side. His contributions to my wellbeing are boundless and our bond has only grown stronger. My amazing family has also been a pillar, ensuring the business remains operational, allowing you to continue enjoying our products. I am grateful for all the love and support. Life is truly about the love you give and receive—and I love you all!”

Somers left an unforgettable mark in the world of television, notably as Chrissy Snow on Three’s Company (1977-1981), as Carol Foster Lambert on Step by Step (1991-1998), and as Sheriff Hildy Granger on She’s the Sheriff (1987-1989).

The star was also well-regarded for her written works, having authored over 25 books and earned the title of a New York Times best-selling author. Her contributions extended beyond acting to her health and beauty endeavors, including the iconic ThighMaster exercise device.

Somers is cherished and remembered by her ‘blended family,’ which comprises her beloved Hamel, her son Bruce, 57, her stepchildren, Stephen and Leslie, and her six grandchildren.
