What is something you saw your father do while you were growing up that made you want to be more like him?

My two siblings and I gathered with the minister to discuss our father’s funeral. We exchanged ideas then the conversation lapsed for a few seconds, and I said, “Dad was the finest man I ever knew.” My siblings nodded. He was the finest man they ever knew as well.

What made him the finest man?

Dad taught us the power of listening closely to what the other person was saying. You can see in this (very bad) photo below. Dad is “hanging on” to every word Mother is saying.

As we grow older, we gain a clearer perspective on the significant role and influence our fathers have played in our lives. I’m curious to hear your personal stories and insights on how your father has shaped you into the person or man you are today.

For instance, I’ve noticed that I learned and adopted my father’s social behaviors, sense of humor, and communication style. Additionally, my passion for music and easy-going attitude came from him. On the downside, I occasionally find myself copying his passive attitude in certain situations or his occasional ‘laziness.’ Nevertheless, I am grateful that he’s my dad, and I strive to learn from his strengths while also working on improving the areas where he faced challenges.

Can you relate to similar experiences where your father has had a profound (positive/negative) impact, shaping you into the person or man you are today?
